Part 3: How Detoxification Boosts Fat Loss

Just like a car runs smoother when its engine and fuel lines are clean, your body runs more efficiently when it is free from toxins. Detoxification provides you with many health benefits—including easier weight loss.

One of the most widely held theories about fat retention is that your body holds on to fat because fat is in insulator. Fat insulates your body from cold and cushions it against bumps and falls. It also uses fat to insulate body systems from toxins.

One reason some people have trouble losing weight is that their bodies are toxic. The toxins in their bodies prompt their bodies to hold onto the fat as a buffer against the effect of these toxins.

That’s why simple detoxification—like I wrote about in the past three posts—can help you on your way to achieving ideal weight.

You know that exercise is also an important facet of any weight loss program. For one, exercise burns calories, calories that will otherwise be stored as fat. In addition, exercise builds lean muscle mass—and lean muscle burns calories at a faster rate than fat, even if you’re just sitting around.

The reciprocal relationship between the amount of fat and muscle that you carry bears direct influence on how your body holds onto toxins and fat. Anything that helps you build muscle will also help you lose fat.

Exercise also boosts the detoxification process. You see, exercise is a tremendous stimulant to the circulatory system and the colon. Having these systems in good running order is essential to achieving ideal weight.

As I’ve mentioned before—and it bears repeating—the average American faces 500 toxic chemicals each day in the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink. The millions of toxic molecules from those chemicals require the body to use up minerals and vitamins as it tries to isolate or get rid of the toxins. The little nutrition we get from our nutrient depleted foods is used up in the process.

That’s why it’s so important that you supplement your diet with whole food nutrition, like that found in Zoe Life. Each Zoe Life stick has 20 whole fruits and vegetables that deliver the antioxidants and phytonutrients your body needs to fight toxins and achieve health.

Including Zoe Life in your day reduces your cravings for unhealthy sweets, fatty foods and other junk foods, which bring more toxins into your body.

With whole food nutrition, plenty of pure water and the right amount of exercise, you too can be a clean, lean disease fighting machine!

Part 3: The Fast Track to Liver and Kidney Health

Last week you discovered some of the benefits of fasting. Have you managed to fast one meal? Are you almost ready to try fasting for 24 hours? Many healthcare professionals recommend that you work yourself up into the habit of fasting one 24-hour period every week. At the change of each season, a three-day fast can really help you to detoxify and reset your appetite so your body craves the foods that build health, renewed energy and long-term wellness.

Resetting your appetite helps you to break your addictions to junk food, sugar and all those mal-nourishing man-made foods.  Your body will start to want whole foods, fruits and vegetables—the God-made foods that build health, not love-handles.

Remember, while you fast, drink plenty of pure water and 100% fruit or vegetable juices-preferably not from concentrate. If you have a juicer, this is the perfect opportunity to get it down from that high shelf in the pantry and put it to work. And, if you don’t have time for all that, take advantage of the whole food nutrition found in Zoe Life. Zoe Life is a great tool for enhancing the effects of fasting, as well as a great addition to your nutrition every day.

Fasting can revitalize your liver and kidneys

Your liver and kidneys are vital to your very survival. Why? They filter out the toxins in the bloodstream, allowing the entire body to ultimately become toxin-free. Modern life often dumps more toxins in than our liver and kidneys can handle. Fasting gives these vital organs a break, a chance to catch up on their detoxification work and an opportunity to rebuild.

When fat breaks down, where does it go? Out through the liver and kidneys. If your liver and kidneys are not up to snuff, your attempts at weight loss will be less effective.

What should you expect when you fast?

Well, as the toxins make their way out, they don’t always leave quietly. You may experience headaches, irritability, minor aches and pains, fatigue or even a minor skin rash. Don’t let these symptoms scare you off from your fast. In fact, welcome them—as they are indications that your fast is making good progress in eliminating toxins.

Is lack of will power a problem?

That’s where Zoe Life can help again. Instead of reaching for a snack, mix up a nice glass of pure water with Zoe Life and serve it over ice in a cocktail glass. Then, toast to your health—literally! You don’t have to suffer when you fast. Your routine days of fasting can become very energizing experiences that you look forward to with joy.

As you fast for your body, you can also fast for your spirit. In the Bible, when fasting is mentioned, it is always mentioned along with prayer. On the days that you fast, take time to pray, meditate and nourish your spirit. For one day, banish complaining, nagging, negative thoughts and set your mind on praise, gratitude and love.

In addition, let your day of fasting also be a day of relative rest coupled with moderate exercise. Rest your body from toxins, your mind from negative thoughts and your spirit from neglect. Wake up to renewed energy and improved wellness!

Part II: The Fast Break

As we explore the subject of detoxification, I want to take a moment to share how fasting can help you speed along the process. Not to worry, I’m not talking about days or weeks of living on lemon juice and vitamin pills. I am going to share some simple, painless ways to give your body the support needed to cleanse and purify its various systems and organs. Because your liver and kidneys are major players in clearing toxins, fasting gives them an especially important boost.

You see, fasting is a great detox tool. It’s an effective way to fortify the good health equation. Remember? Good Health = Detoxification + a Balanced Immune System.

Did you know that the average American faces 500 different toxic chemicals every day? These chemicals are found in the food you eat, the water you drink and the very air you breathe. More are found in over-the-counter and prescription medications, vaccinations, cleaning products and on the job site.

Fasting shifts your immune system into turbo charge.

Every one of the toxic molecules that you ingest every day requires your body to expend minerals and vitamins to contain and expel—or store it. The nutrients that your body needs to replace aging cells, fight off infection and maintain healthy energy and metabolism is diverted to handling these toxins. How does fasting help?

1. Your body is always removing toxins. When you fast, you quit bringing new toxins in. That naturally reduced the total toxic load on the body.

2. Fasting gives the digestive tract a rest, especially if there are known—or unknown—food allergies.

3. Fasting allows your body to focus on immune function instead of removing new toxins. Then, your immune system can fight infection, bacteria, viruses, fungus, parasites and even cancer.

4. Fasting improves elimination. This helps your body remove toxins that are stuck in your colon.

5. When you fast, fewer fats enter the blood, resulting in improved tissue oxygenation and improved immune function.

I promised you fasting would be simple and easy. To get started, skip lunch one day this week. Replace your lunch with Zoe Life and a few extra glasses of pure filtered water. If this sounds too difficult, try fasting from junk food, sugar or fast food to get started.

Next week, skip lunch and dinner. Week three, try fasting for one whole day. As a life habit, I recommend fasting one 24-hour period each week.

When you fast from food, replace it with liquid: 100% fruit or vegetable juice, pure filtered water, unsweetened green tea and Zoe Life. Zoe Life is perfect because each serving gives you nutrients from 20 fruit and vegetables.

You do have to drink lots of water to release toxins. How much? One ounce for every two pounds of weight. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, drink 100 ounces of water every day. I do NOT recommend a total food and water fast.

Next week, I will share more about how you can detoxify your body and enjoy improved wellness. Thanks for stopping by!

Raise your awareness to the toxins that surround your life

They are everywhere you turn!

Today’s tid – bit: Recently scientists have detected up to 300 toxic chemicals in the average person’s blood studies

Tip # 1  for less toxins in your lifestyle

Educate your family

Over the past few years, there has been a lot of hype created about detoxification (detox).  There seems to be a new and improved plan unveiled every week and the marketing world has created a frenzy that is feeding on the needs of those who are desperate to feel and look better.  Sound familiar?  Just as the “get rich quick” schemes and the “melt away body fat overnight” gimmicks are destined to fail after digging into your bank account, so are most of the over rated detox programs.  Who could possibly get excited about or even be remotely interested in pursuing a colon cleansing program or using an irrigation device to flush their system?  I cringe at the thought.  When most people hear the word “detox”, they immediately relate it with starvation along with guzzling down some Hollywood concoction while spending days on the toilet.  Well, this perception is far from the truth.  Just as with everything else we face in life, a reasonable and common sense approach is always the best choice when pursuing a healthier and more efficient digestive process. Over the next few weeks, Dr. VerHulst and I will be educating you regarding the dangers of everyday toxins and how to avoid them.  Be sure to check out his blog every Friday.  The more you know about your enemies, the easier they are to overcome.  The toxins we face on a daily basis are certainly an army of enemies that we all want to conquer.  Stay tuned!

Converting your home to a toxin free environment with the amazing line of Zoe Clean products is the first step to take towards a healthier tomorrow for your family.

Part 1: Detox Pure and Simple

You’ve heard the buzz and seen the promotions for the products, treatments and special diets proclaiming to be the best or only way to detoxify your body. I don’t intend to list which ones work and which ones are scams here in this column, but I do have this to share. You don’t need to make use of heroic cleansing procedures that are painful, difficult or expensive.

To healthfully detoxify your body, you simply have to abide by some basic principles. Eat well and drink plenty of pure water.

Why detoxify?

When I consult with folks experiencing a pattern of poor health, I like to tell them about the “health equation.” Good Health = Detoxification + a Balanced Immune System. Whether you live with a chronic condition like arthritis or diabetes, a serious illness like cancer or just don’t have the energy and stamina that you used to enjoy, detoxification is your first step to feeling better.

Many folks I talk to will say, “Well, I’ve got this illness and that’s just the way it is. There’s nothing I can do about it.” Hogwash! There’s a lot you can do.

For starters, be intentional about what you put into your body. Clean oil even helps an old tired out car run a little better! But put a little sugar in the gas tank, and it’s all over. Most of us take better care of our cars than we do our bodies. Instead of lubricating our cells with pure water and feeding them the nutrients they crave, we load up on sugary, chemical-laden fast food, convenience foods and soda pop.

When you rely on these man-made foods for nourishment, you not only ingest toxins, you also starve your body of the nutrients it needs to break down and excrete the toxins that are already there. On the other hand, whole food nutrition, what I call God-made food, gives you the building blocks your body needs to flush toxins out of your system.

Simpler than science

Every day researchers are finding new ways that the nutrients in whole foods build our health. You don’t have to wait for their papers to be published! It’s easy. Eat fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Abolish white bread and pastas from your pantry and opt for 100% whole grains. Fortify yourself with healthy proteins: free range eggs, fish, legumes and lean grass fed meats.

Eat what you can eat raw—and the rest, cook from scratch. And, unless these foods come from your own garden, supplement with a good multivitamin/mineral and start your day off with a glass of Zoe Life.

Don’t forget! Drink eight to ten glasses of pure filtered water every day. Water not only hydrates you, it also flushes out the toxins stored in your fat cells, liver and kidney, arteries and colon. Just like that old car will run better after a radiator and transmission flush—so will you!

In the next four parts of this little series, I will share easy tips on how you can detoxify each of the body areas where toxins are hiding: your liver and kidney, arteries, fat cells and colon. Thank you for allowing me the blessing of sharing my heart and life’s work with you today!

A picture of yourself could be worth a thousand words.

Those words may not need to be spoken out load if you are not happy with your appearance

Today’s tid – bit: The first step toward solving a problem is as simple as accepting the fact that there is a need.  The need to become leaner and healthier is not something to ignore.  Look at the facts and take action to improve!

Tip # 15  for a lean and healthy life

Take Photos

When you decide that enough is enough and you are going to lose weight no matter what, before and after pictures are fantastic and extremely motivating.  Exposing the truth to a camera is not always the most exciting thing to do when beginning the journey towards a leaner you, but it will open your eyes to say the least.  I suggest that you keep a journal of photos to document your progress whether you like it or not.  It will seem like you are torturing yourself, but this is a must.  Study the before photos and see yourself as others see you.  If you don’t like what you are looking at, commit to fixing it.  Use this process as motivation, not discouragement.  Since your mind is set and failure is not an option, these photos will be such an inspiration for you to reflect upon and share with others.  Your friends will begin to notice your success and rest assured, they are going to ask how you did it.  Well, what better way to help them than to break out the journal with the photos?  Who knows, you might get a good laugh.  You can also take this a step further by recording your body measurements to go along with the photos.  Measure your waist, thighs, hips, arms and chest.  Compile these measurements alongside the photos and do a comparison every few months.  It is very satisfying to see where you started and how you are progressing, plus this will prevent you from becoming stagnant.  Creating positive results that you can reflect upon with your eyes is definitely a motivator.  Share your story of success with others and you may just be the one to help point them in the right direction towards a healthier more satisfying life.  Have fun with it!

Always notice and appreciate your positive characteristics first.     This will make it much easier to take steps towards improving the minor negative traits.

Don’t forget to start each day with an eye opening serving of Zoe Life.  This simple habit will jump start your metabolism by sending a signal to your brain that your body has been fed since it is loaded with real fruits and vegetables and only has 25 calories.  Zoe Life is a convenient way to make sure that your day is off to a healthy start!

A plan without action is nothing more

than a daydream without results.

Today’s tid – bit: Be prepared for success when it comes to reaching your ideal weight.  Don’t let spontaneous action without a well thought out plan become a short-lived burst of enthusiasm that falls short of your goal.

Tip # 14  for a lean and healthy life

Set Realistic Goals

Ask yourself this question.  How long did it take to achieve the undesirable shape that you are in?  I hear so many people say that they were star athletes in high school or college and had abs of steel or maybe they were as thin as a rail until they had children. The fact is that if you are overweight and out of shape, this condition didn’t just show up one night in your sleep.  It actually requires effort to achieve poor health and appearance.  Although fat will slip up on you over time, you don’t have to adjust to it and continue to swell.  Don’t just buy bigger clothes and pretend it’s not happening.  Sooner than later, the poor shape will lead to poor health and then the excuses really pile up.  The point is, don’t expect to be on the cover of a fitness magazine next month.  Be patient and realistic.  Decide how you would like to appear physically and break that desired results down into segments that can be achieved without torturing yourself.  Maybe your dream weight is 40 pounds lighter than your present weight.  Create a chart in your Personal Journal that I discussed in the last segment and follow through with reaching that goal.  Striving to lose 3 pounds a week is a goal that can be easily achieved.  Document your goals along with your results on the calendar each Sunday.  If you don’t succeed every single Sunday, don’t freak out and quit, just adjust along the way.  Don’t get into the habit of continually adjusting though.   Put the plan into action and your dream weight will be realized in just a short 13 or 14 weeks.

By embracing a positive attitude combined with written documentation of your progress and setting goals that you can actually achieve, you have a plan that will not fail.  You are well on your way to becoming the lean and healthy person you have always dreamed of being.

Set your goals……Get a plan…… Write it down……Stop making excuses……  Get it done!!!

Have a healthy, fun-filled day and let your

enthusiasm for life be witnessed by all!

These two amazing men are dear friends of mine and their books have changed my life!  I’m sure they will have a profound affect on the way you look at life also.

Have you exercised today? Why not? I don’t mean to nag, but you and I both know that if you want to achieve ideal weight … healthy ideal weight … you have to start exercising!

Last week, we talked about how you needed to eat in order to lose weight. You need to ingest more of those good nutrients that your body needs to correctly digest and burn the calories you have stored up as fat. Well guess what? You need to eat the right nutrients in order to succeed with your exercise goals, too.

Why is it so hard to get started with an exercise program? Well, maybe your schedule is already too full. Maybe you don’t have the physical energy to get moving. Or, maybe you just can’t get motivated mentally.

I can’t clear your schedule. But I can tell you how to deal with the latter two reasons that exercise seems out of reach. You see, you need to provide your body whole foods nutrition so it has the energy to exercise. And, you need to provide your mind whole food nutrition so it can overcome the lethargy and confused thinking that muddles your efforts to start a new healthy habit.

You’ve heard the term “brain food.”  You do indeed need to feed your brain! Sugary, chemical laden, over-processed foods gum up your mental works. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein provide your brain the fuel it needs to keep those synapses firing.

You also need the nutrients from those whole foods in order to build lean muscle mass. You can exercise until the overweight cows come home, but you won’t build an ounce of lean muscle mass if your body doesn’t have the right building materials.

What’s so important about lean muscle mass? Well, even at rest, lean muscle mass burns 20 times as many calories as fat tissue. Trouble is, as we age, we lose lean muscle mass—about one pound a year after age 30. So, each year, your body burns 400 less calories a day. That’s why exercise is so important. It not only burns calories, it also rebuilds muscle mass that keeps on burning calories 24/7.

Are you ready to start exercising? Only if you are getting whole food nutrition. But that’s no excuse to wait another day. Stock your fridge and pantry with the healthy foods that life is made of. And, to make sure you are getting every nutrient you need, supplement with Zoe Life. It gives you an all natural, low-calorie, low-glycemic jumpstart that’s equivalent to eating 20 fresh fruits and vegetables.

I hope that the lessons I’ve shared with you over the past four weeks help you make the miracle of better health happen in your life. We’ve talked about how the mental, emotional and physical relate to unhealthy weight gain. Don’t forget the spiritual! God has the perfect health insurance plan for you. You’ll find it in your owner’s manual, His Word, the Bible.

Lack of Knowledge leads to Mindless Eating

resulting in Unnecessary Weight Gain

Today’s tid – bit: The only way to improve any situation is to be more aware of the cause of the problem and become accountable for your own actions.

Tip # 13  for a lean and healthy life

Keep a Personal Journal

Have you ever cruised through the day without even realizing what you had for breakfast or lunch?  Over the years, I have enjoyed putting people on the spot by asking a simple question that always creates a pause and a stutter.  If someone tells me they are feeling sluggish, always tired and just a bit under the weather, I’ll quickly ask, “what did you eat yesterday”?  They usually respond with, “well, uh, uh, I don’t really recall, I’ll have to give it some thought”.  99.9% of the time, I can pinpoint the cause of their problem by analyzing what is going into their mouth.  The problem is, there are so many people who don’t even think about what they are eating much less plan out a nutritious day.

Becoming accountable for your own actions means to be truthful to your self.  Some of us need to see things in black and white to stay focused and on the right track.  I suggest that if you are serious about becoming a leaner, healthier person, one of the very first things to do is to keep very detailed documentation of everything you do physically, everything you eat and everything you feel.  The more you spill out of you brain into this booklet, the better.  Keep this workbook close to you at all times.   Write down every single bite or swallow that goes into your mouth.       Even if it accidentally fell off the candy isle shelf and you caught it in your mouth because your hands were full and you hate to see food go to waste, write it down!  I mean everything…. and don’t lie about it.  This will be a huge eye-opener, especially the first month of your new lifestyle. Make notes throughout the day regarding your feelings related to food.  For example, how eating, in general, makes you feel?  How a certain food or snack made you feel, did it boost your energy, did it satisfy a craving, etc.  How does eating make you feel about yourself?   I’m not suggesting that you need to experience a psychiatric evaluation reflecting upon your nutritional day.  It is however always a great idea to document your feelings and look back on what triggers your emotions.  This workbook of success will be something that you may decide to keep on your coffee table after you reach your goals.  Not only will it bring a smile to your face, but it will also remind you that you will never go back.

Enjoy your day and take a moment here and there

to be aware of the beauty that is all around you!

Happiness leads to healthy choices

Healthy choices lead to longer life

Today’s tid – bit: A positive and fun attitude towards life will have a direct effect on your body’s ability to maintain a healthy weight.

Tip # 12  for a lean and healthy life

Adjust your attitude

Becoming leaner and more health conscience is not necessarily a stroll in the park.  In most cases it tends to be somewhat of an emotional rollercoaster.  The problem many people struggle with when they finally become fed up with being overweight is developing a “get up and get going” attitude.  Sadly, It has become human nature to settle into a comfort zone and accept the fact that you have become overweight.  So many victims of the effects of today’s culture    will become sedentary and let their negative thoughts convince them that it is not worth the trouble to lose a few pounds.  Unfortunately, this outlook will turn those few extra pounds into a cleared path towards obesity, eventually resulting in a plethora of health problems. Well, you can choose not to settle for this common approach to the present day way of life.  With a little determination and a positive attitude adjustment, you can age gracefully while embracing an active and exciting lifestyle without sickness, without aches and pains and without feeling tired and worn out!  It is as close as a smile and a laugh away!

Once you portray a positive attitude about yourself inside, your health and appearance will be brighter on the outside.  You will make wiser, healthier choices in all aspects of life and this truly is the ultimate goal.  You will quickly realize that your new persona will reflect an encouraging light to those around you.  Now that’s a good feeling!

Here are a couple of pointers to help keep your
spirit enlightened towards staying lean

Wake up with a smile and good attitude.  I try to make a conscious effort immediately after waking to take a deep breath, stretch and smile.  That may sound a little silly, but I find that the smile really starts my day in a positive way.  I also make it a point to say something enlightening.  My favorite is to simply say, “this is the day that the Lord made and I will be glad and rejoice in it.”  It doesn’t matter if you are usually grumpy Gus and your family is accustomed to you just grunting for the first couple of hours in the morning, if you force yourself to be happy first thing everyday, you will see a change.  Your family may think that you are losing your marbles, but hopefully it will rub off.

Laugh everyday. Find something to laugh about and you will be amazed at how good it will make you feel.  There are actually therapeutic benefits to laughter. Dr. Lee Berk and fellow researcher Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University in California have been studying the effects of laughter on the immune system. Their published studies have shown that laughing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, increases muscle flexion, and boosts immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease-fighting proteins called Gamma-interferon and B-cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, and produces a general sense of well-being.  Of course, I find something silly to do everyday in front of my kids.  It is often something as immature as doing a cartwheel in front of the TV while they are watching their favorite show or running all over the house in my socks sliding on the hardwood floors. My oldest son refuses to get on an escalator with me because he knows that I will always act like I trip when getting off of it and make a scene.  That’s just funny, I don’t care who you are.  The key is to have fun and release those “feel good” hormones as often as possible, no matter how goofy you look!

Attitude is everything no matter what you are trying to accomplish.  Life is way too short to have a bad one.  As my great friend Dr. Don tells everyone, “you don’t have to get in shape and enjoy life, you get to”!   Think about how far this type attitude can take you.

Everyday is a gift

Smile and enjoy every moment!
